Egypt is a dictatorship, controlled for decades by Hosni Mubarak, pro-Western leader and key ally of Israel . Currently his regime, corrupt and repressive, is in crisis.
In recent years the country is experiencing a large wave of workers struggles that began with a mass strike in December 2006 in the huge textile plant Mahala in the Nile delta regime's response to this new movement has been predictable: the repression and torture in detention. However, have failed to break the fight for freedom, for democracy, social justice, in solidarity with Palestine ...
Last April the union was set to tax collectors in Egypt. 14 months of fighting, which began with an eleven-day strike, have been required to configure the first free trade union in Egypt since 1957. The tax collectors' union, Union of Egyptian Real Estate Tax Authority Employees (URETAE) - represents thus, the first experience of working legally recognized organization in Egypt to the union vertical and only governing the country's trade union system for over half a century. Despite the steps made, the Egyptian regime is still working to overthrow the legal recognition that it is fragile and unstable. This is not an isolated struggle, and that is part of a general claim in the country for legalization of free trade unions and social and political change in Egypt. The undersigned
congratulate and express support and solidarity to the newly established Union of tax collectors in Egypt and in other demonstrations for the instauración pluralidad of a union, democracy and social justice in the country.
