nou Group solidarity with union struggles in Egypt

català Abaixo in Egypt has always seemed a distant country to the English state, a country with whom we have not historically had cultural and political ties, but today is a neighbor of the Mediterranean area.

Egypt has always been a key country - by its geopolitical situation, and Suez Canal, its political-economic, cultural and demographic in the Arab world. A country is necessarily involved in the Palestinian conflict. Currently its rickety dictatorship, corrupt and repressive custom figure by Mubarak - octogenarian patient and close ally of the U.S. - is in crisis. The Islamists are the main opposition force.

But this picture has been transformed in recent years a new phenomenon: great struggles in the factories - especially in the textile industry - and the emergence of a new independent trade union movement, the official union is fully integrated in the repressive state. The regime's response to this new movement has been predictable: repression arrests and torture.

Stop the show trial of Egyptian protesters

begin trials of 49 Egyptians accused of involvement in the two-day uprising in Mahalla, a Nile Delta town in April 2008.
the 6th and 7th April, Mubarak troops occupied Ghazl el-Mahalla, the largest textile factory in the Middle East, with 27,000 workers, aborting a strike announced by the Independent League of Textile Workers to protest increases spiraling food prices and to demand a minimum wage increase has remained stagnant since 1984.

The troops used live ammunition, tear gas, water cannons and clubs against peaceful protestors in the town who took the streets after the crushing of the strike. There were at least three dead and hundreds injured and arrested.

The 49 detainees face a list of false charges, some of them confessed under torture. They will be tried in a special court, which has been consistently denounced by human rights observers for lack of international standards for a "fair and secure."
The trials begin on 8 November. We the undersigned call on the Egyptian dictatorship to release them immediately. Alfons

Mahala Repression in Egypt: small victory and thanks

Tres de los principales activistas obreros de Mahalla, que fueron detenidos after the strike on April 6-Kamal el-Fayoumi, Tarek Amin and blogger Karim el-Beheira, have been released.

latter reported having been tortured by electricity and beatings by Egyptian security forces. According to its Association Agreement with the European Union, the Egyptian government to respect human rights. All three have recovered their jobs at the factory.

His release and reinstatement on the ground represent a victory, and are a sign of the effectiveness of the solidarity they received, both from within and from outside Egypt.

Egyptian activists send their appreciation to individuals and international entities signed messages of solidarity and protest against the repression. (More info )

still many activists arrested in Egypt, so solidarity is still needed. The question on the subject that was raised before the European Commission remains in place (see below).

More importantly, the social and economic problems that prompted the strike on April 6 remain, and fighting for change in Egypt continue. Just for instance, according to EFE (08/06/2008): "At least five people were injured Saturday in a protest of about 5,000 people from wheat shortage in a northwestern province of Egypt. "

Nevertheless, the release of these 3 people is good news. We are especially pleased the people who attended the Cairo Conference in March and met in person to Karim el-Beheira.

WRITTEN QUESTION of Raul Romeva i Rueda (Verts / ALE) to the Commission

May 16, 2008, E-2739/08
Subject: Social Protest in Egypt

In recent weeks, several media have echoed the different civil society protests in Egypt, derived from the precariousness of working conditions in many sectors including industry, public transport, education, health or administration.

Thousands of people, with the support of social movements, took to the streets as a response to police action to prevent the execution of the strike in the textile factory in Al Mahalla, the largest in Egypt. Such protests have ended with the arrest of more than 800 people, among which are counted more than 150 political activists and more than 600 protesters from Al Mahalla and the leaders of the strike committee of the factory.

These facts merely to show, first, a situation of unsustainable social and working conditions, and secondly, the lack of democracy and freedoms in the country and repression by the regime of Mubarak, who has had to date with the connivance of the West.

In view of the situation and under the conditions of the EU-Egypt, with special attention to respect for human rights, what is your opinion on the Commission such news? Do not you think that police repression is clearly violating the conditions of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, in particular Article 2? Has made, or has provided the Commission any action taken, and in particular for the release of demonstrators and activists?

In 2007 there were 580 strikes, demonstrations and protests, involving between 300,000 and 500,000 workers. It is likely that the 2008 figures are more than double, reflecting the huge increase in food prices. Solidarity with the Egyptian workers

[A baix en català]
Egypt has a tightening of repression at the hands of pro-Western regime of Hosni Mubarak, since the state banned a strike called for April 6, 2008 and part of the textile mill workers of Al-Mahalla, the biggest factory in Egypt.

The Mubarak's security forces used rubber bullets, tear gas and live ammunition against people protesting in Al-Mahalla and in several nearby villages, killing at least two deaths, hundreds wounded, and about 800 detainees.

The Al-Mahalla strike is of great interest to the trade union movement. Represents only the latest example of a wave of workers struggles that have spread throughout Egypt, fighting poverty and a dignified life in a country where a typical salary does not reach the 40 € a month. The sectors involved are as diverse as industry, transport, education, health, government administration ... and a very active student movement.

The people opposed to the wars and occupations in the Middle Medium also has special reason to show solidarity with these struggles. Bush's war policy in the region depends on the support of local regimes like Mubarak. Egypt receives about 2 billion dollars a year in U.S. military aid, and is a key ally of Israel, which provided the cement needed for the West Bank wall. The siege on Gaza Strip border with Egypt, would be impossible without the cooperation of Mubarak. Any progress in the fight for social justice and democracy in Egypt is also a breakthrough in the fight for freedom of Palestine and against the wars in the region.

For all this, and Egyptian workers these days are struggling and suffering repression deserve and need our support. The

and signatories:

1. We send our solidarity to the workers of Egypt and the Egyptian Movement for Democracy and Solidarity with Palestine;

2. We urge the Egyptian government to release 800 people detained these days, including more than 150 political activists and more than 600 demonstrators in Al-Mahalla (mainly women and children) as well as leaders of the strike committee of Al -Mahalla,

3. We ask the European Union stop supporting the Mubarak regime and add your voice to the call for a free elections;

4. We demand that the state media to give equal coverage English to the struggle for democracy in Egypt that offer longer-also demands fair-democracy in countries that are allies of the West.

Al Mahalla strike: bad GARA

Egypt has a comparable explosion of social struggles, in many respects, with the last years of Franco.

pro-Western President, Hosni Mubarak, has 27 years controlling the country through repression and with regard to labor unions with something akin to vertical.

An average industrial wage is 250 Egyptian pounds, about 40 euros a month. Even with the Egyptian price represents a miserable salary.

labor conditions, social cuts and increases in the basic prices, lack of democracy, and, not least, the shameless collaboration of U.S. government and Israel in the slaughter of their Palestinian brothers and sisters, fill the glass made during the past year and a half.

In December 2006, 27,000 textile workers in Mahalla City went on strike, called the bonuses that the government had promised. The strike began when 3,000 workers in the garment factory came forward and took the other plants, asking their male colleagues would join the protest. Al Mahalla's victory unleashed a wave of fighting that continues to grow today.

Failure of the concessions made in the first strike in Mahalla brought more struggles in 2007, which added workers to their demands the dismissal of the "union committee" that the regime imposed on them by fraudulent elections. The fighting in Al Mahalla, like starting to happen in other sectors, the committee directed the workers themselves, elected assemblies, again, is very similar to the workers' commissions that came here under the Franco regime. Are emerging independent unions. The reason for this call is that this Sunday, April 6, male and female workers of Al Mahalla make another strike and occupation of the factory, as part of a struggle for a decent minimum wage (Sunday is working in countries Muslims).

need international solidarity in the form of messages of support (if they receive money from organizations from abroad could end up in prison.) These messages arrive in and the strikers are hung on the walls of the factory.

need not be long: in fact, as they have to translate into English to send and then into Arabic in Egypt, better to be short ... Possible model: Signed: union / federation / works / trade union branch / office ... company / sector / ... City "

Mahalla Voltage: Urgent Message of Solidarity

With the Cairo conference
we approach the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq We are well aware of the importance of international protests against the war. For this reason, the convergence and coordination between the movements around the world are becoming increasingly necessary. Social Forums have provided a space where many activists, especially in the West and Latin America, have been reunited.

But there is another space, less known by activists of the English State created by their own movements in the Middle East: Cairo Conference. In late March, the Conference held in the heart of the most important city in the Arab world, the 6th edition. As in previous editions, will meet activists from across the region, since the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, to union activists and student activists from Egypt-war movements around the world.

The Conference is organized by a broad coalition of parties and social movements in Egypt, the radical left, the Nasserists, the Muslim Brotherhood, civil rights groups, Kifaya, the campaign for democracy in Egypt ...

During the past year, El Cairo, and Egypt in general, have been the scene of protests very important, from a massive wave of struggles of workers and peasants, to mass demonstrations in solidarity with Gaza. Many of the protagonists of these protests will be attending the Conference.

As activists based in the English State, it seems important that the movement from here to participate in this meeting, and to disseminate their proposals. So we encourage individuals and entities to make the effort to participate in this conference. Signed

5 th Conference Cairo - Statement

International Campaign against U.S. and occupation Zionist "Towards an international alliance against imperialism and Zionism"

Conference Declaration The 5th Cairo Conference is held at a time of great potential, but also many dangers. The war launched by the Zionist military machine against Lebanon, with support from U.S. and Europe, ended with an unprecedented defeat of the Zionist entity [the State of Israel] at the hands of the heroic resistance of Hezbollah. However, the battle is not over and the fence that the Zionists and the U.S. administration trying to impose on the Lebanese resistance, with the help of local officials and using sectarianism as a weapon after they failed their tanks and aircraft, means we face significant challenges that require us all the greatest degree of solidarity with the resistance and conscious struggle against sectarianism. In Iraq, the fierce resistance against American occupation has pushed the U.S. administration to an impasse. Here too, the occupation uses his last letter and try to convert the battle against it in a nasty sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shiites. The resistance will liberate Iraq only if it avoids falling into the trap of sectarianism and become a unified national movement, a movement that unites Shiites and Sunnis against the occupier U.S.. And in Palestine, where the resistance, under the leadership of Hamas, has survived the siege of hunger without succumbing to American pressure, Zionists and Arabs to recognize the Zionist entity, as well as the Oslo accords. There is also the enemy and its local agents have tried to impose a civil war to divert the resistance of its objectives and cause Palestinian hands spill Palestinian blood. Despite recent agreements and be aware that it must resist such attempts, the Palestinian resistance faces a major challenge and the siege will not be deleted if not revive the Intifada and not reactivated the resistance forces . Also today

we witness the escalation of military threats against Iran and the widespread mobilization of the American administration to launch against this country a fierce air attack. Clearly, the greater the loss of the U.S. administration in Iraq, it speaks most of the Iranian threat and the need to confront him. As always, Arab regimes "moderate" play their part in this agenda, whether in the fields of logistics and military campaigns or through the media in order to isolate the Iranian regime.

While imperialism and its allies are using sectarianism as a weapon to divide and weaken the resistance, U.S. and European governments and their media use weapons of racism and Islamophobia to justify its colonial aggression and seek division of the movement against the war. Thus, anti-Muslim racism is an integral part of our struggle against war.

In Arab countries can no longer separate the struggle against the despotism of the struggle against war and against American and Zionist colonialism in the region. Imperialist allied regimes, especially Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, play a fundamental role in attempts to strangle and besiege the Palestinian resistance, Lebanon and Iraq, in exchange for U.S. support for their despotism. For this reason, any action taken in the Arab countries for freedom and justice is a new shot gun resistance, and each victory achieved by the resistance is an earthquake that shakes the thrones of despotism and corruption in our region. Nor can continue to separate the policies of hunger and misery imposed by these schemes to the Arab people, on behalf of capitalist globalization and neoliberalism, the role played in the regional conflict. These same systems, which open their territories, territorial waters and airspace to U.S. military-colonial economic policies that only benefit the interests of huge multinational corporations and a handful of corrupt local entrepreneurs. And all this at the expense of the vast majority of the population. Supporting the resistance in Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon
