Five injured in massive protest against the shortage of wheat in northern Egypt and


EFE Report (08/06/2008):

At least five people were injured Saturday in a protest of about 5,000 people against the shortage of wheat in Egypt's northwest province, told Security sources told Efe.

According to the sources mentioned, were wounded as a result performance of riot police in the province of Kafr el-Sheikh, who resorted to tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Moreover, the local government newspaper "Al Ahram" reported that security forces arrested some 30 people in clashes between protesters and police in the coastal town of Burullus.

Likewise, the sources indicated that participants in the protest disrupted traffic on the main road in the area for seven hours.

The global food crisis has affected in a special way to Egypt, where at least 15 people were killed last March in the queues formed around facilities where subsidized bread is sold.

The shortage of basic goods and shortages were also behind the two general strike in April over the Internet against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his government.
